Will’s Creativity, Sketching & Charity Fundraising
The Old Cross Tavern trading under landlord Bev and landlady Mary was sold due to the retirement of the landlord and landlady. On 7th November 2023, the Tavern started trading under new management.
Even though we’re no longer running the Tavern, Bev & Mary that is, we would still like to share this story about charity fundraising for the Breast Cancer Now Charity.
The starting point is that there is always lots of creativity in pubs. This story about Will Butcher’s SKETCH of the Tavern and how it raised funds for the Breast Cancer Now Charity is such an example.
Many of you will know Will from when he worked in the Tavern a few years ago. You might even remember how he used to hang out in the Tavern after he was done working a shift and would be hanging out at the bar or top table sketching. Or, you might remember him from the days he would come to work wearing his signature boiler suit. Since those days, Will embarked on a full-time career as an artist and a very talented and successful one.
One of his art projects was a sketch of the Old Cross Tavern (about a year and a half ago) – see annexed photo of it.
You might recall that we displayed the sketch for sale in the pub with the notice that 10% of any print sketch sales would be donated to the “Breast Cancer Now Charity” and that the 10% charity amount raised from Will’s sketch/print sales would be matched by the Old Cross Tavern (Bev and Mary).
Here is the Report on TAVERN SKETCH Print SALES and Fundraising.
Will sold 28 sketches at £45.00 = £1260.00. The 10% donation (10% of £1260) from Will is £126.00.
The Old Cross Tavern (Bev & Mary) matched the donation amount raised by Will with another £126.00.
Total raised for the Breast Cancer Now Charity is £252.00.
A very special thanks to Will for using his artistic creative skills for charitable fundraising.
Very special thanks too, to all of the persons who purchased Will’s sketch of the Tavern and thus contributed to the fundraising for the Breast Cancer Now Charity.
If you’re wondering where Will is now, he’s on extended travels exploring the world searching for creative inspiration and life experiences. Right now, he’s in Bangladesh and says he is about to fly back to Mumbai as a stepping stone to explore Hampi, Kerala and further south to Sri Lanka.

Here’s the information Will sent to us about his ARTISTIC ENDEAVOURS.
William Butcher was born in Hertfordshire, England in 1998. Growing up in the town of Hertford and spending many weeks every year in Cornwall. After studying music and art in later school years William continues to search for inspiration and ways to express himself in every way he can.
William’s passion for drawing began at a very young age, using skills of his hands to create endless worlds to get lost in. With a keen curiosity and openness to explore, the focus on his drawing began to convey a mystery and vastness reflecting his adventure.
With attention to detail resembling a woodcut/ etching effect using only pen techniques; William’s work has been compared to artists such as Franklin Booth and Aubery Beardsley. The focus on animals, jungle and the sky has become the most expression for William to reflect this sense of freedom in which he searches for and feels within him every day.
Aswell as being an abstract painter focusing in ‘Expressionism’ and a self taught picture framer, giving him further possibility to his creations. For painting portfolio see @williambutcher_painter on instagram.
